Is St. Kitts & Nevis LGBT Friendly?

Last year, we visited the Park Hyatt St. Kitts for our wedding anniversary. And we loved the resort. In fact, it’s one of our favorite resorts (see our entire review here).

One question we often get asked is if St. Kitts is safe for a gay couple. And to be fair, it was something we researched ourselves before we visited the island. Truthfully, we were a bit apprehensive before our trip. Why? Because St. Kitts and Nevis still have laws on the books making any homosexual activity between two men illegal. And the island tends to lean pretty conservative due to their religious views. But despite all of this, we decided to visit the island anyway.

And personally, we had no problems on the island or at the Park Hyatt St. Kitts resort. Everyone was very hospitable. And tourism plays a big part of their economy. We were respectful when we were outside of the resort and obviously kept our public displays of affection to a minimum. But while we were at the resort, we showed affection towards each other like we would on any vacation. And the staff at the Park Hyatt St. Kitts made us feel very welcome, addressed us as husbands and made sure our wedding anniversary was spectacular.

So, if you have concerns about visiting St. Kitts and Nevis as an LGBT traveler or couple, it’s a tough call. We will definitely return. And the Park Hyatt St. Kitts is someplace you will feel comfortable and safe. But the island itself could do more to make LGBT travelers feel welcome. And we’re hopeful moving forward, as tourism continues to grow, that they continue to make progress towards equality for not only tourists, but also their citizens.
